Unified Security: Why Broadcom Joined Symantec, Carbon Black

Combining Symantec's prevention and anti-malware expertise with Carbon Black's post-attack forensics and EDR skills created a comprehensive endpoint security offering, said Broadcom's Vice President and General Manager, Enterprise Security Group Jason Rolleston.

Combining Symantec's prevention and anti-malware expertise with Carbon Black's post-attack forensics and EDR skills created a comprehensive endpoint security offering, said Broadcom's Vice President and General Manager, Enterprise Security Group Jason Rolleston.

Rolleston said the integration brings Symantec's ability to use threat research and anti-malware tools to stop cyberattacks together with Carbon Black's use of forensic investigations and endpoint telemetry. He said Broadcom is fusing threat intelligence and debuting a shared agent framework across both portfolios to enable code reuse, reducing development costs while improving functionality across both product sets.

"Symantec wasn't as focused on EDR, and Carbon Black wasn't as strong in preventative measures," Rolleston said. "We see a way that these two technologies come together in a strong way and broaden our approach to the market. Carbon Black is not just an enterprise player; they're big in the lower-end enterprise and commercial space. It made sense."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Rolleston also discussed:

  • Moving Carbon Black's infrastructure to GCP for unified cloud management;
  • Broadcom's shift to aggressive partner enablement to penetrate mid-market, SMB;
  • Competing and winnings against rivals like CrowdStrike, Microsoft and SentinelOne.

Rolleston is responsible for Broadcom's combined portfolio of Symantec and Carbon Black solutions for information, network, endpoint and application security. He joined the company through the VMware acquisition, where he was most recently Carbon Black's vice president and general manager. Before this, he was chief product officer at Kenna Security where he led the company through the acquisition by Cisco.
