Palo Alto Networks Prepares Organizations for Quantum Security with QRNG Open API

Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ: PANW), a global leader in cybersecurity, has unveiled a Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) Open API framework designed to help organizations prepare for emerging quantum security challenges. Created in collaboration with six pioneers in the QRNG domain, the framework aims to foster multi-vendor interoperability across the industry.

This innovation allows organizations to develop QRNG-based systems that remain robust and future-proof, irrespective of the underlying technology or provider.

Rich Campagna, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Palo Alto Networks, emphasizes that achieving quantum safety is a challenge too significant for any single entity—be it a cybersecurity company, government agency, or critical infrastructure group—to address alone. He underscores the importance of collaboration in the field of Quantum Random Number Generation (QRNG) to safeguard against the looming threats posed by quantum computing. Palo Alto Networks is actively contributing to this effort by working alongside standards organizations, governments, and industry partners to drive progress toward standardization. The release of the QRNG Open API marks an exciting step forward, aiming to benefit as many organizations as possible.

As quantum computing advances and converges with artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and classical supercomputing, securing current systems against quantum-enabled attacks becomes imperative. QRNG leverages quantum mechanical principles to produce truly random numbers critical for generating secure cryptographic keys. Experts suggest combining the newly introduced NIST post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards with QRNG to provide a robust defense against future cyber threats. By introducing the QRNG Open API framework, barriers to adopting QRNG technology are significantly lowered, enabling organizations worldwide to access top-tier cryptographic solutions and prepare for the transformative impact of quantum computing.

Available through the Palo Alto Networks GitHub portal, the QRNG Open API can be embedded into any application. Later this year, Palo Alto Networks Next Generation Firewalls (NGFWs) will support the QRNG Open API, enabling the network security platform to bring in entropy for cryptographic functions.

Developed by Palo Alto Networks and leading QRNG technology partners, Anametric, ID Quantique, Qrypt, Quantinuum, Quantropi and Quside, the QRNG Open API will:

• Simplify QRNG integration by removing proprietary silos.
• Maximize interoperability in multi-vendor networks and promote freedom of choice, allowing customers to select the best technologies and systems for their needs, including both cloud-based and on-prem solutions.
• Accelerate QRNG adoption by removing barriers with a collaborative, open approach.
• Provide a common mechanism for obtaining high-quality entropy from an external QRNG platform.
